AAUW Michigan Boosts Voter Registration through Series of Local Drives
AAUW Michigan branches (led by AAUW Rochester) came together for a voter registration drive during a live performance of The Vagina Monologues on the steps of the Michigan Capitol. On July 18, Michigan branches worked with coalition partners including League of Women Voters, National Organization for Women, Planned Parenthood, and the Coalition of Labor Union Women to register 104 new voters and recruit 34 new It’s My Vote campaign volunteers. AAUW’s Livonia Branch also worked with coalition partners to hold voter registration events at a local Farmers Market and a Sunday Jazz Festival.

On September 25, 2012, volunteers, civic groups, and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” for National Voter Registration Day. What is your state or branch planning for this critical day?

Ohio Branches Compiling State Legislator Voting Records
AAUW Heights-Hillcrest-Lyndhurst created a Voting Record detailing the records of state legislators on issues important to women and families, providing a fantastic resource for Ohio voters. The completed charts for the Northeast Ohio Senate and Ohio House are already published on AAUW Ohio’s website .AAUW Ohio divided the state into five districts, with the Northwest and Southwest Districts in the process of making voter charts as well.

AAUW New York
At AAUW New York’s Summer Conference in Cazenovia, AAUW’s State Grassroots Advocacy Manager, Kimberly Fountain, held a training session about our It’s My Vote campaign. This well-attended event was the first non-impact grant state “get out the vote” training. Public Policy Directors throughout the state of NY agreed to make the It’s My Vote campaign a priority, and have already participated in various voter registration drives.

AAUW Idaho Sponsoring Women and Politics in Idaho and the Nation
AAUW Idaho is hosting a variety of events this week, including a luncheon with College/University representatives about campus outreach strategies, and a luncheon entitled Women and Politics in Idaho and the Nation with current Idaho State Legislators and Lisa Maatz, AAUW’s top policy adviser.

AAUW Oregon Marches to Celebrate Suffrage
On June 9, AAUW Oregon members marched and chanted in the Rose Festival’s Grand Floral Parade. The Parade celebrated 100 years of suffrage for Oregon women. Members from AAUW and partner organization League of Women Voters dressed in early 20th century suffragette’s styles to honor the historic suffragettes and promote voting for all women!

Elgin Branch Launches Widespread Effort to Boost Millennial Women’s Activism
The Elgin Branch of AAUW Illinois formed a coalition with citizens from Kane, DuPage, and Cook counties to register and mobilize millennial women for the upcoming election. Two It’s My Vote campaign organizers from Illinois were recently featured in an article explaining the importance of young women’s political participation, since young women make up the largest voting bloc in the country.

AAUW Nevada Engages Local Candidates and Millennial Women
AAUW Nevada is planning a televised candidate forum for local candidates, along with their monthly Cocktails and Convos for AAUW members and millennial age women to discuss policies important to women, and women’s participation in the 2012 election.

AAUW Pennsylvania Plans VoterEd Activities
At the statewide retreat, Pennsylvania members discussed the upcoming election, and eagerly strategized how to implement campaign activities in their communities. Branches began planning voter registration events at blood drives, book sales, and on college campuses.

AAUW Washington Hosts Candidate Forum
AAUW Washington hosted a candidates’ forum at the Peninsula Senior Activity Center in Klipsan, Washington. The 140-seat auditorium was filled to capacity, with spillover audience members standing in the back.

Douglas County Branch Hosts Candidate Forum
On July 18, AAUW’s Douglas County, Colorado Branch hosted a public candidate forum at Castle Rock Middle School. Their event featured candidates from the 4th Congressional District, the 45th House District, 18th Judicial District, and 2nd Commissioner District.

Austin Branch Plans Five Voter Education Events
A grant has been approved for AAUW Austin, along with League of Women Voters, National Women’s Political Caucus, and National Organization for Women to host five upcoming events at Austin Community College, including volunteer registrar training, and a screening of the newly released documentary Miss Representation.

Correction from last week: Woodbridge Branch of AAUW Virginia Registers Voters
We apologize for our mistake in the previous newsletter — it was AAUW’s Woodbridge Branch who worked vigorously in the 100 degree heat for their voter registration drive during the July 4th parade. We are so proud of AAUW Woodbridge, and want to give them the credit they deserve!
